Atlantic City Ranks Second in US Casino Revenues for 2022

The American Gaming Association (AGA) has revealed the casino earnings for United States operators in 2022, with the nation hitting a new record of $60.4 billion in commercial gaming revenues. The figure beats the $53 billion set in 2021 and sees Atlantic City casinos reach the number two spot for earnings, falling just behind Las Vegas, Nevada, in the top spot. Over the next few years, we could see New Jersey overtake Nevada as the top commercial revenue earner.

Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the second-place finisher when it comes to commercial gaming revenues in the US for 2022. The New Jersey casinos brought in almost $2.8 billion in earnings, a boost of 8.5% from 2021.

The positive trend shows that Atlantic City is recovering from the closures and restrictions brought on by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Players were visiting casinos once again in 2022, and the year helped the region almost reach number one for commercial gaming in the United States.

Atlantic City casinos have worked hard to redevelop and diversify their offerings, so players want to come back time and time again. Redevelopment plans continue as operators work on new ways to bring in consumers. Hopefully, we will see even better numbers in 2023 as the casinos continue to be successful.

Online casino gaming was also up in New Jersey. The NJ online casinos reported growth of earnings by 15.9%. This is a huge boost in one year and shows just how popular the online services are in the Garden State.

For the entire United States, commercial casino operations hit record numbers more than expected by early estimations for the year. CEO and AGA President Bill Miller stated that the industry outpaced the 2022 expectations significantly, which shows.

Americans are choosing to enjoy casino gaming in record numbers which is helping to provide benefits to communities and taking away from the illegal marketplace. In-person gaming is still strong in the United States, despite the popularity of online gaming options.

The AGA has a Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker that shows in-person gaming is the backbone of the industry. The revenue tracker is an important tool as it shows how commercial properties are doing in several areas. Retail sports betting and land-based casinos count for more than 80% of the national gaming revenues. The AGA has reported that each of the major verticals recorded record earnings last year.

Slots and table games of casinos were up over $47 billion, while sports betting came in at $7.5 billion. Online gaming registered just over $5 billion. Each industry is doing well as players take advantage of options available locally and nationwide.

Additional figures from the report showed that 84 million adults in the US visited a casino in 2022. Sports betting hit a record handle of over $93 billion for the year. This was most likely improved due to the increase in states offering sports betting services. Online casino gaming grew across the US by over 35%.

The online gaming figure will hopefully continue to grow as more states start offering iGaming. Legislation is in the works within several states, but lawmakers cannot seem to get on the same page when it comes to what to offer, who should be involved, and how to tax it.

If online gambling can spread to more states, we should see even higher numbers for operators in the US. It will take time to see other online casinos, poker, and even sports betting come to other states, especially those with more conservative lawmakers.
